"Wars Do Not Solve Problems, They Merely Create New Ones"
I believe this quote is true. After doing this assessment and reading through articles, it is my belief that wars do not solve any problems, war does not save lives, it merely destroys them and benefits few. Wars tend to solve the immediate problem but they always create new problems and this has happened throughout world history. An example of this can be seen with the end of WWI which set off a series of events which led onto WWII which then created events leading to the Korean War and beyond. The same can be said of recent times, with much of the problems in the Middle East arising from removing Saddam Hussein. Removing a source of evil only resulting in more evil? Was he evil or just not doing what the US wanted him to do? Governments take us to war and everybody loses except those who have a vested interest in the war in the first place. There always seems to be a hidden agenda in wars.

"A state of war only serves as an excuse for domestic tyranny." - Alexander Solzhenitsyn
"The master class has always declared the wars; the subject class has always fought the battles. The master class has had all to gain and nothing to lose, while the subject class has nothing to gain and all to lose - especially their lives." - Eugene Victor Debs |

Often we see or hear about the casualties of war and about soldiers who have had physical injuries but until recently, little was known about the emotional effects of war. It has been estimated one in five veterans at some stage suffer from post traumatic stress disorder or major depression. The actual emotional effects of war on soldiers can be distressing and affects their family and friends. In the past soldiers were often left to deal with it in silence, it was an unspoken part of war. Today there are organisations that can help people suffering this disorder but it is still estimated less than half will seek help.
Nicholas' Story,
It was around midnight when he stepped into the middle of the road, lay down on the white line and placed his identity card on his chest. A passing taxi driver was the first to spot him and pulled over. The driver picked up the card on his chest, reached for his phone and began dialling. Soon two police officers arrived and made their way towards the large, powerfully built figure lying face-up on the bitumen. Under the gaze of nearby diners in the trendy restaurants of Canberra, he began to sob. "I was hoping a car would run me over," he explains. He just started bawling his eyes out, saying, "I need help, I need help." |
In his article about war, John Horgan writes "According to surveys I’ve carried out for more than a decade, the overwhelming majority of people view war as inevitable, a permanent feature of human existence. This fatalistic outlook is wrong, both empirically and morally. Empirically because it contradicts what science and history tell us about war. Morally because it perpetuates war by discouraging us from seeking solutions. " This quote shows that the majority of people don't want war. We know how it starts and why. We even know the results and effects. We know it doesn't solve problems but creates so many more. However as we have learnt through history, seeking peaceful solutions within our world may not always be possible. There will always be someone that disagrees with this.
Stop All the Blood
by Carlos Villalobos Restrain your anger And run to find some shelter Flames and eruptions Are there only reactions Comrads and brothers Are facing all the slaughter They will not surrender To them you are the offender Stop all the blood They've had enough If you keep fighting People will keep dieing There's got to be another way Without causing pain everyday Vengeance and sorrow Will be yearning tomorrow Twenty more years remain Until we can conquer their reign It seems never ending As it ends everything When will you learn that There are other ways to combat There are only two outcomes here And each of them is very severe You can either rise victorious And to them you will be glorious But just as you can rise, you can fall a failure After all that you had to endure It's not worth going through when there are other things you can do |
